But being a graduate of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daveramsey.com\">FPU<\/a> I\u2019m a cheapskate at heart.  It\u2019s particularly disheartening to spend my hard earned dollars on an untried bottle and then be disappointed.  This means that\u2014given the vast world of wine out there\u2014I tend to be unadventurous and stick with the familiar\u2026 boring!<\/p>\n<p>Some recent reading about a relatively new company called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstflavor.com\/\">First Flavor<\/a> has prompted me to embark on a simple experiment.  First Flavor manufactures taste strips for consumer products in an effort to give customers a point-of-purchase opportunity to taste their clients\u2019 wares.  Rum, vodka, tequila, smoothies, fruit drinks, and toothpaste taste strips are among their offerings\u2026 why not wine?<\/p>\n<p>Aficionados will laugh at the notion that the subtle characteristics of fine wine will translate to a paper (or other edible substrate) you pop in your mouth.  Probably, but to an engineer it is certainly worthy of a quick and dirty experiment.  My first stop was a <a href=\"http:\/\/chemse.oxfordjournals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/30\/suppl_1\/i234\">research article<\/a> on brain response to odor and taste, which gives a little insight into preparing such strips.  Next I need to find edible paper for the substrate\u2026 hmm, do I have to order rice paper from China?  Instead I try the next best thing, and sure enough, I can order <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Paper-Products-International-Beverage-Napkins\/dp\/B002E4MLPM\/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&amp;s=home-garden&amp;qid=1265740823&amp;sr=8-6\">edible paper from Amazon<\/a>!  (Books, DVDs, iPods, and edible paper\u2026 makes perfect sense to me.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.encoretechresources.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verdelho.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-223\" title=\"Verdelho\" src=\"http:\/\/www.encoretechresources.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verdelho-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.encoretechresources.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verdelho-300x237.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.encoretechresources.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verdelho.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Now the wine.  Well it turns out I have a cousin in California who is one of the state\u2019s premier growers of hard-to-find Iberian (mainly Portuguese) wine grapes.  Ron, if you are reading this air freight a case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.altamesacellars.com\">Alta Mesa <\/a>Verdelho and Tempranillo ASAP\u2026 it\u2019s tax deductible as an R&amp;D expense.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.encoretechresources.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verdelho.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.encoretechresources.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verdelho.jpg\"><\/a>After preparing some taste strips and checking them against the real thing (eat a taste strip drink a case, eat another taste strip drink another case, etc.) I\u2019ll report back.
